On Wednesday night, the WHS varsity volleyball team won a tough conference match-up against the ROWVA-Williamsfield Cougars.
The first set did not start in favor of the Geese. Mistakes allowed the Cougars to start with a five-point lead over the Geese.
R/W had great serves and hits that allowed them to pull ahead. Senior Camryn Anderson broke their streak by slamming a kill from the outside. The Cougars responded by pulling ahead, making the score 4-11 in favor of the Cougars.
The Geese started to shorten the lead with great work on both offense and defense. The Geese called their first timeout to pull their heads together. The Cougars didn’t allow the Geese many points, the first set ending with the Cougars winning 21-25.
The Geese had a better start to the second set, gaining a short lead of 3-1. Both teams showed great skill, keeping the score close throughout most of the set.
R/W started to gain a lead, causing the Geese to call a timeout with the score being 15-17. Great serves by junior Tinsley Newman and senior Camryn Anderson allowed the Geese to stay ahead. The Geese won 25-23, causing a third set to be played.
The Geese were very strong in the third set, showcasing great blocks and kills that improved their score. The Cougars called a timeout, the score being 14-5 Geese. This timeout did not allow the Cougars to pull ahead.
The geese won 25-10, advancing their conference record to 5-0. Their overall season record is now 19-2.
Tonight, the Geese will travel to Rockridge. The freshman will start at 5 p.m. JV will be at 6 p.m. and the varsity will be at 7 p.m.

Rowva/Williamsfield defeated Wethersfield sophomores 25-15, 25-16 and Wethersfield freshmen won 21-18, 9-21, 15-8.
