It was a busy weekend for the Kewanee High School soccer team, which competed in the War on 34 invitational at Earlville. Kewanee won two games and lost one, and placed fifth in the tournament.
“Our first game was against Earlville High School,” Coach Jesus Bermudez said. “The game was a hard game, we kept possession of the ball, creating the most goal opportunities but not making it into the goal, at the end we lost 4-1.”
Cristian Cazares scored for the Boilermakers from an assist from James Roginski.
On Saturday morning the Boilers played Yorkville Christian. “The game went well for the Boilermakers, since the beginning our idea was to take possession of the ball, and not let Yorkville have it,” Bermudez said. “Kewanee played aggressive and it paid at the end winning the game 8-0.”
Cristian Cazares scored six goals, and Michael Bermudez and James Roginski each had a goal.
In the second game on Saturday, “We knew it would be hard against DePue,” the coach said. “In my years coaching, we had not defeated them in this tournament, but we played believing we we change history.”
When the game started, “Our Boilermakers team looked very strong,” Bermudez said. Tyson Currie erased from the field their best player, and Kewanee little by little took possession of the game winning the match 8-1; “History was changed,” the coach said.
Cristian Cazares scored four goals, and James Roginski and Jack Coombes had two goals apiece.
For the first time Kewanee made it to fifth position in War on 34 with one lost game and two wins.
