KHS soccer season ends with regional loss

Kewanee High School’s soccer team closed the season with a defeat in the regional semifinals, falling to Quincy Notre Dame 6-0.

“We knew the game was a hard game against Quincy Notre Dame, we had the option to be defensive; but that was not the way we wanted to win, so since the beginning we went to attack,” said Coach Jesus Bermudez. 

Early on the game Quincy scored on “a very good combination breaking into the defense,” Bermudez said.

“Kewanee had a couple of chances on the first half that we couldn’t finish, we were close but not enough,” he said.

The first half ended with Notra Dame leading 1-0.

“In the second half we came out with the mentality of winning,” Bermudez said.

He said Isidro Martinez had chances to score, as did Dontel Wommack, also Chance Desplinter, Jesus Del Toro and Alex Barron. 

Michael Bermudez exploited the right wing a couple of times connecting with Jesus Del Toro and crossing the ball; but no one could close the play. on the other side, Quincy finished their chances.

“When we were 0-3, we gave a chance to all of our varsity seniors,” Bermudez said.

“Our Boilermakers played hard, they gave their best,” he said.

Goalie Gustavo Bermudez had 17 saves and Kewanee had 12 shots.
