Kewanee’s cannabis dispensary will open Monday, after a long wait for state approval of the facility.

Now known as Trichome Cannabis Company, the dispensary in the former Broken Chimney restaurant building on Tenney Street will hold a grand opening Monday, including a ribbon cutting at noon.

Chad Anderson, one of the investors in the cannabis company, said security is tight at the dispensary. Purchasers will have to show their ID (a driver’s license or Illinois ID card) three times before being admitted to the area where cannabis is available for purchase.

Anderson said all of the cannabis Trichome will sell has been purchased from growing operations elsewhere in Illinois. Trichome is building its own grow facility at Cole Street and Railroad Avenue, and expects to have it in operation by the end of the year.

Under Illinois law, purchasers of cannabis from licensed dispensaries must be 21 or older, and can only purchase up to 30 grams of flower cannabis at a time.
