Kewanee Voice readers share what they value most in local news

By Susan DeVilder    April 17, 2026

The results of The Kewanee Voice’s 2026 Readership Survey show strong support for local journalism and a clear desire for more hometown coverage.

Conducted March 9–21, the Readership Satisfaction Survey drew 210 responses from readers across Kewanee and Henry County, offering insight into what keeps them reading and what they’d like to see next.

Most respondents said they read The Voice daily or several times a week, citing local news, government and civic coverage, community events, schools and youth activities as their top interests. Readers also praised the publication’s consistency, accuracy and community focus, saying it helps them stay connected to what’s happening around town.

When asked what they’d like to see more of, readers mentioned high school sports scores and photos, local government follow‑ups including court cases and county board updates, local history, investigative reporting, photo galleries and updates from organizations such as the Salvation Army, Rotary, Kiwanis and the Kewanee Public Library. Others suggested adding volunteer opportunities not tied to social media, a “Wisdom” advice column and a poetry or creative corner.

Respondents also said they’d like more frequent updates, a stronger digital presence—especially on Facebook—more consistent email delivery and a daily newsletter with links to new stories, which The Kewanee Voice already offers. Many noted they appreciate the mix of serious reporting and lighter community features that make The Voice feel personal and local.

Half of respondents said they have donated to The Kewanee Voice, while half have not. Among non‑donors, common reasons included not knowing the publication is a nonprofit, not living in Kewanee, not knowing how or where to donate or simply not donating to charities.

The Voice plans to use the survey results to guide future coverage and make small format adjustments. The newsroom has welcomed a new staff reporter as part of its effort to expand local coverage and connect with a wider range of readers. A mini redesign of its website is planned to make it easier to sign up for newsletters and donate.

The staff and board of directors of The Kewanee Voice extend sincere gratitude to everyone who took time to participate and share their thoughts. Your feedback helps keep local news strong—and keeps Kewanee’s voices alive.
