Kewanee Park District officials are hoping for a state grant to help pay for a new handicap-accessible playground at Windmont Park.

Parks Director Andrew Dwyer reported at Thursday’s Kewanee Park Board meeting that he hopes the district can receive a $500,000 OSLAD grant for the project.

OSLAD stands for a state program called Open Space Land Acquisition and Development. The park district has received a previous OSLAD grant for park construction work.

Dwyer said plan is for the playground near the Windmont shelter house to be revamped, and accessible sidewalks and other features to be added.

If the grant is approved, the park district would also allocate funding for the project.

Also Thursday, Karen Stickle reported on a hole in the ground near the pickle ball court at Northeast Park is a hazard to walkers.

She said the hole caused a fall that resulted in her going to the hospital and requiring surgery.

“It’s not a hole,” she said. “It’s a trench.”

She said she reported the situation to park district officials, but the hole still hasn’t been fixed.

Dwyer told her he’ll look into the situation.

No business was conducted at the meeting since only two board members attended, so there was no quorum.
