Time marches on, and the month of March is upon us. But before we get into March, here are a few observations…
I don’t know about you but…
I think the best thing about the recent Super Bowl that took place in the Big Easy was that the game and the halftime show afforded multiple opportunities for one to take a nap (if one was so inclined to do so).
I don’t know about you but…
I don’t believe that Patrick Mahomes’ performance in the above-mentioned Super Bowl diminishes one bit how good a quarterback he is. This old football coach believes that the game is won or lost in the trenches. The combination of how well the Eagles’ defensive line played and some shoddy play by the Chiefs’ offensive line were mostly responsible for Mahomes’ poor performance. I get that the NFL is a quarterback-driven league, but I still believe that the QB is like the head coach. They get too much credit when things are going well and too much of the blame when things go awry.
I don’t know about you but…
I feel that if you wanted to show your Valentine how much you care, instead of a dozen roses, maybe you should have purchased a dozen decorated eggs for your special someone. A recent trip to Walmart found the cost of a dozen eggs to be around $8.50. Are you kidding me? I might be relegated to eating just oatmeal, fruit, bacon, sausage and toast for breakfast. Oh well, I will probably survive.
Mr. Trump’s first month of his second term of office has begun with a flurry of activity. I don’t know about you but…
I think that some of the recent changes enacted by the current Trump Administration are head scratchers, while some are a little more disturbing.
I don’t know about you but…
I am all for fiscal responsibility in government spending. I don’t believe that has been the American way for quite a long time. I do believe a cut in any governmental program will hurt someone, and therefore, it might not be well received. Many citizens of our great country have gotten so used to benefiting from the generosity of our government that any change may be hard to deal with.
I don’t know about you but…
I am still confused about how the acquisition of Canada, Greenland and especially the Gaza Strip benefits the citizens of the United States…not to mention renaming the Gulf of Mexico!
I don’t know about you but…
I hope that it is not asking too much for the assurance that what I place in my recycling container does not end up in some landfill. Maybe I expect too much!
I was standing at my kitchen sink one recent Tuesday afternoon, gazing out the kitchen window at an unobstructed view of my neighbor’s front yard. I noticed a disappointing sight. The LRS truck was emptying the contents of both of my neighbor’s trash and recycling containers in the same truck. Are you kidding me?
Well anyway let’s March on. There is an old saying that March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb.
I don’t know about you but…
With the weather for most of February being what it was, I hope that March comes in like a lamb. I also hope March gives us many glimpses of the wonderful spring and summer weather that I enjoy so much.
I don’t know about you but…
I think that March celebrates some very interesting dates such as the 13, National Good Samaritan Day; and the 14, Pi Day. And how can we forget March 15? Remembering to “Beware the Ides of March!” is one of the few things that I remember from studying Shakespeare in high school.
I don’t know about you but…
I think that every day should be Good Samaritan Day. Please don’t pass up any opportunity to do an act of kindness for others no matter how large or small. And by all means, when you get a chance to volunteer your time and efforts, please do so.
I don’t know about you but…
I believe that Pi Day is a holiday that needs more attention. Don’t hesitate to use Pi to calculate the circumference of your favorite pie while you are consuming it. My favorites happen to include pecan, banana and chocolate cream and strawberry, among others. I hold pie in the same regard as bacon and fried chicken. Any pie is better than no pie.
I don’t know about you but…
I found it interesting to learn that in March of 1947, Henry County was declared the largest pork producer in the nation. And on March 23, 1949, the Illinois General Assembly officially named Kewanee as the “Hog Capital of the World.” I still answer, “The Hog Capital of the World,” when asked where I live.
For those of you that don’t know, March 27 is National Joe Day when you are encouraged to celebrate anyone named Joe. I don’t know about you but…
I have known quite a few Joes in my life. It seems to me that the Joes that I have known best have been anything but “Average Joes.” I wonder if there is a National Greg Day? I doubt it. Oh well!
I don’t know about you but…
I think it is time to wrap up this month’s offering. I close by wishing you a great month of March. I hope you find opportunities to take many naps. I know I will find some nap time. Also, you have my permission to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, March17, and Greek Independence Day, March 25, in any fashion you wish.
I close with this month’s quote of the month which isn’t so much a quote, but some lines from the song “While You See a Chance” by the incomparable Steve Winwood. “While you see a chance, take it…. Find romance…. Because it’s all on you.”
