KEWANEE WEATHER

It’s all Greek to me-Celebrate July edition

By Greg Christakos    July 2, 2024

I don’t know about you but…

As a youngster I remember July as being a very warm time of year- a time of outdoor outings and celebrations. Sometimes that “spending time” occurred in a nearby state or city park. It could be a picnic or simply grilling favorites over charcoal in a backyard get-together with family and friends. I guess that makes sense since July has been designated National Parks and Recreation Month, National Grilling Month and National Picnic Month, among other national celebrations.

I don’t know about you but…

Any time is a great time when you are able to do those kinds of activities….

I don’t know about you but…

As mentioned above, July can have some of the hottest weather of the year. This year Mother Nature must have gotten confused. She decided to bring the heat in June. I wonder what the weather will be like for the rest of the summer?

Before I go on about July, I would like to comment on an event I attended on June 15th. It was the retirement celebration for Kewanee Community School District’s outgoing superintendent, Dr. Chris Sullens. I don’t know about you but…

To me Chris Sullens’ 18-year run as superintendent at District #229 is worth noting. Whether you like or dislike the way things were done during his tenure, there can be no denying the passion and energy that he displayed in doing what he thought was best for the youngsters of the school district. He has left a legacy that will endure for a long, long time. Besides all proceeds from the event went to a wonderful cause, the Care Closet Fund. A special thanks goes to the Kewanee Schools Foundation and Cerno’s for hosting the event.

I don’t know about you but…

The consumption of food is a very important part of my life. Probably so much so that it is to the detriment of my health and wellbeing. Oh well! July had set aside three days to celebrate three of my favorite foods. July 6th is National Fried Chicken Day; July 8th is National Chocolate with Almonds Day, and July 11th is National Rainier Cherry Day.

I don’t know about you but…

To me fried chicken is like bacon. Any fried chicken is better than no fried chicken. It is absolutely one of my favorite foods. In fact, if I was told I could only have one food the rest of my life, fried chicken might get the nod (it would be right up there with bacon and grilled lamb).

I don’t know about you but…

I prefer my chocolate with almonds to be the dark chocolate variety, with or without the almond being surrounded by coconut. Both types can be found at our local Aldi store, along with many choices of the combination of milk chocolate and almonds. Goodies of this nature should be enjoyed in moderation. I enjoy the almonds surrounded by dark chocolate and coconut so much that enjoying them in moderation is very difficult for me.

I don’t know about you but…

If you never had an occasion to eat Rainier cherries, I would highly suggest that you try some. But do so soon, they are only available for a short while at this time of year. It is my favorite cherry and one of my favorite fruits of any kind.

I don’t know about you but…

No mention of the month of July would be complete without a discussion of the celebration of our national day of independence, July 4th. I consider myself somewhat of a history buff and I marvel at the courage, strength and foresight that our founding fathers had to not only to start the revolution, pull off the revolution, but to also set up the foundation of a nation that is still going strong almost 250 years later. Many of them risked everything that they had- wealth, property, family and even their lives for what they believed in. Now I know that our nation is flawed, but the story of the American Revolution is indeed a remarkable story.

I don’t know about you but…

I think it is time to wrap up this edition. I leave you with my thought of the month. This month’s thought comes from a sign on the wall in the Purple Onion restaurant in Annawan. “If you mind your own biscuits, life will be gravy”.

Remember July is the best month to take naps. At least until August comes along!
