Hispanic Heritage Celebration to coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month

By The Kewanee Voice    September 13, 2023

The Kewanee Commission on Human Relations, along with End Zone Sports Bar, will host the first Kewanee Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 6 to 11 pm. The event will be held at End Zone, located at 116 E. Third St., and feature music, food and vendors.

Jessica Fornander is a member of the Human Relations Commission and one of the committee chairs for the celebration. Fornander said the newest Kewanee celebration will coincide with the National Hispanic Heritage month, held each year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The month is meant to raise awareness and recognize the contributions and influences of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of their communities and countries.

The population of Kewanee is over 10% Hispanic, according to the most recent census data. Because of that, the Commission on Human Relations wanted to include Hispanics in a community event, as they have done in the past with Black Lives Matter and the June Pride Fest, said Fornander.

“Everyone is excited about it and about introducing the Hispanic culture to the community.”

Live music from “Clave Armada” will be featured, as well as a DJ, food and vendors. For more information, email KewaneeHispanicHeritage@gmail.com.
