CAMBRIDGE — In addition to the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs office in Kewanee, Henry County is also home to the Henry County Veterans Assistance Commission (HCVAC), located in the courthouse in Cambridge.
Since 1994, the commission has provided vital support programs to help veterans across the county access benefits, transportation and emergency aid.
The office is staffed by Superintendent and Veterans Service Officer (VSO) Cindy Kustush and Veteran Service Officer Venessa Fielder. Mitch Fielder serves as assistant superintendent and transportation coordinator.
HCVAC offers three core programs for Henry County veterans:
Emergency Financial Assistance: A short‑term safety‑net program providing vouchers for groceries, utilities and rent to eligible veterans who meet basic financial‑need guidelines and reside in Henry County.
Veterans Service Officers (VSOs): Certified officers offer free help filing VA benefits and claims, enrolling in VA healthcare, obtaining military records or DD‑214 forms and managing disability or pension claims.
Medical Transportation: The commission coordinates free rides to VA‑approved medical facilities using a local Disabled American Veterans (DAV) van. Transportation is available for appointments in Iowa City, Davenport, CBOC and other approved sites.
Office hours are Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with Wednesday and Thursday by appointment only.
