Head Nods and High Fives, a restaurant that has served New York-style pizza in downtown Kewanee since January, will close its doors later this month.

“After an incredible journey Head Nods and High Fives will be closing our doors after service on Sunday, Dec. 14,” proprietor Kevin Newton wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page Wednesday.

The restaurant opened in January at Second and Tremont streets in downtown Kewanee, serving New York-style pizza. That variety of pizza was a favorite of Newton, who grew up in a New Jersey community near New York City.

“Opening this pizzeria has been one of the greatest adventures of my life,” Newton wrote. “What started as a passion for craft and a belief in bringing people together over great pizza became so much more.

“We built a community here — one head nod and a high five at a time,” Newton continued. “To every person who walked through our doors, shared a meal with us, celebrated with us and became part of our story — thank you. You made the place what it was.

“While this chapter is closing, the Head Nods and High Fives philosophy isn’t going anywhere,” Newton wrote, “We don’t live, laugh, love — we head nod and high five our way through life. That spirit will continue, and when the time is right, we’ll be back in a new form. This isn’t goodbye forever, it’s see you down the road.”

The restaurant’s final two weeks of service will be this week and next, Thursday through Sunday from 4-9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 will be the last day of service.
