Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo is building a new outbuilding that will act as temporary housing for medical students, physician housing and additional storage, hospital foundation officials announced in a news release.

“This construction is much needed and has been made possible in part by donations from the Geneseo Foundation, the Francis G. & Betty J. Miller Foundation, a gift from the Hammond-Henry Hospital Endowment and the Jo Ann Parsons Memorial with a combined total of over $142,000,” said Katie Orwig, Hammond-Henry Hospital foundation manager.

The benefits of this 40’ x 48’ building are threefold, she said.

First, the building will have two studio apartments. These apartments will house medical students and physicians that are temporarily fulfilling an open shift.

“For example, a locum physician may be covering an emergency department physician while on vacation,” said Orwig. “Currently, the hospital incurs hotel or rental costs for students and locum physicians. Adding these accommodations will be a cost savings.”

Two garage bays are also planned and will help prolong the use of hospital-owned vehicles. Harsh weather conditions and vandalism have left their mark on the hospital vehicles.

Lastly, the outbuilding will provide additional storage for various departments.

“As large as the hospital is, storage is always in great demand,” said Orwig.
