Utilizing funds from the “Trees Forever” grant, Kewanee Park District officials and staff spent Saturday, May 20, planting trees at Northeast Park. A group of volunteers and students assisted them in planting over 30 trees.
The grant, Trees Forever’s Recover, Replant, and Restore, provides funds ranging from $500 to $3,000 to Illinois communities to diversify their community forests or recover from natural or man-made disasters. Kewanee has experienced several violent storms that have brought down trees in its area parks.
The grants also help communities prepare for disasters by planting more diverse, disease and storm-resistant shade trees. Projects can include planting trees along streets, trails and community entryways at schools, public buildings and parks.
