The Geneseo City Council on Tuesday, July 14, discussed a proposed amendment to the city’s noise ordinance that would allow residential construction to begin earlier during hot summer months.
The change, which would apply from June through September, is being considered after numerous noise complaints were filed when construction crews began working early to avoid extreme heat.
Mayor Sean Johnson informed the council that the city continues to face challenges hiring police officers. Because the department anticipates approximately five departures within the year, all qualified applicants will now be moved through the full hiring process to prevent future understaffing.
During citizen comments, Megan Sundeen requested an independent review of Alderman Brett Barnhart’s involvement in the operations of a horse‑breeding facility while he also serves in a leadership role for a local nonprofit. Sundeen submitted her written request to Police Chief Casey Disterhoft.
Alderman Craig Arnold raised questions about the timeline for the proposed train project in Geneseo. It was noted that IDOT is waiting for confirmation of a federal funding extension before determining next steps. The council will work with a Bi‑State representative to survey residents about their interest in the project.
The Chamber of Commerce reported that downtown businesses will host a sidewalk sale July 24–25. Trains, Planes and Automobiles is scheduled for Sept. 10–12. The Chamber’s Annual Dinner will be held Nov. 5 with a theme highlighting eras of Geneseo, which will change year to year. Nominations for business awards are open on the Chamber’s website. Planning is also underway for the Christmas Walk on Dec. 12, themed “Home for the Holidays.”
In a police department update, Chief Disterhoft said two new Ford Explorers have been built and the department is gathering equipment quotes. Costs may exceed the budget due to additional camera needs. Fencing at the range is expected to begin by the end of the month, and Disterhoft confirmed that the Flock on 82 is moving forward.
Other updates included completion of underground work on North State Street, with mainline paving expected to finish by the end of July. Work on the North water tower is now complete.
