TAZEWELL COUNTY — Caitlynn J. Girkin, 27, a former Creve Coeur police officer and former Kewanee resident, was arrested Tuesday, July 7 and charged with first‑degree murder in the March shooting death of Adolfo Cazares, 29 — who also previously lived in Kewanee.
According to several media outlets, the Illinois State Police arrested Girkin and booked her into the Tazewell County Jail, according to jail records cited.
Authorities had confirmed she was a suspect in the killing of Cazares. The victim was found with a gunshot wound inside the home in the 500 block of Roosevelt Road in Creve Coeur around 2:15 a.m. on March 10 after a 911 call was placed by Girkin to authorities.
First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but Cazares was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tazewell County coroner ruled the death a homicide.
Illinois State Police’s Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 4 is leading the investigation and has not released information about a possible motive. Girkin and Cazares were friends and roommates at the rented house in Creve Coeur. Friends of both reported that the day leading up to the murder was a normal day with the pair washing her car, dining out and doing household chores.
The investigation remains active.
Both Girkin and Cazares attended Kewanee High School. Girkin was a graduate of the Class of 2016. Cazares graduated in 2014.
