The professional fireworks show scheduled for the Fourth of July will be allowed, according to a press release by the City of Kewanee.

The ban on open burning, firepits and individual fireworks will still be enforced, but the Kewanee Fireworks Spectacular scheduled for Tuesday, July 4 at Northeast Park can go on as planned.

Whether the event would take place because of the severe drought was uncertain. On Tuesday, fire and Henry County emergency officials surveyed the area from where the fireworks would be launched. According to a press release from the Kewanee Fire Department, an inspection was made of the firework locations. In addition, officials spoke with the pyrotechnicians responsible for the operations and decided to honor the firework permits for the holiday.

“The Kewanee Fire Department has full confidence in the professionalism of the pyrotechnic companies and will be putting extra equipment and personnel in place for the shows,” the press release said. After an early afternoon thunderstorm on Thursday, the City announced that the professional show would be allowed.

The Kewanee Fireworks Spectacular will kick off at 7:30 pm with the Kewanee Veterans Council and the presentation of colors. A musical performance will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Official remarks will be made at 9:30 pm, followed by the fireworks display at 9:45 pm.
