No one was home when a fire was reported at a Rockwell Street home early Tuesday morning.
“At approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, the Kewanee Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1100 block of Rockwell Street,” Fire Chief Jake Forney wrote in a news release.
Fire crews found a two-story residence with heavy fire conditions in the kitchen area, Forney wrote.
“At the time of arrival, it was unknown if anyone was inside the home. The occupant was later confirmed to be away from the residence at the time of the fire,” the chief wrote.
Pets were located inside the home.
“Unfortunately, one dog and one cat perished in the fire, and one cat remains unaccounted for at the time of this release,” Forney wrote.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Kewanee Fire Department.
The Kewanee Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Kewanee Police Department and the Kewanee Community Fire Protection District. A total of nine firefighters operated on scene for approximately two hours.
“The Kewanee Fire Department would like to thank our assisting agencies for their quick response and continued partnership,” Forney concluded.
