Volunteers for the Step Ladder Tutoring Program Tag Day fundraiser will be out this weekend, on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30 at both the Kewanee Save-a-lot store and Walmart.
The volunteers will be raising money to fund both the tutoring program and a four-week session over the summer at the Kewanee Public Library.
The Step Ladder Tutoring program is a project of The Sunshine Community Services Center, a nonprofit agency. Its mission is to help “one child at a time” with the focus on assisting junior high students from both the Kewanee and Wethersfield school districts.
Etta LaFlora, executive director of the Sunshine Community Services Center, said the goal of the program is to help middle school students become responsible for their own education and improve their attitude towards school and learning.
“The schools have done a great job in working with us as we assist students in our program,” she said. “We try to encourage students by letting them know their future is in their hands, and they can follow a path that leads to a better life.”
Look for the volunteers at both Kewanee locations from 10 am to 2 pm over the Easter weekend.
