On his final day on the job, outgoing Wethersfield CUSD 230 Superintendent Dr. Andrew Brooks informed the Board of Education at its June 30 meeting that the district is entering the new fiscal year in a strong financial position.

The board approved an amended FY26 budget which shows a fund balance of nearly $6.3 million.

Dr. Brooks reported that the amended budget is balanced across all four primary operating funds. He noted that the district has received all anticipated state revenues as well as the first installment of property tax payments.

Dr. Brooks also said that following the completion of current projects, approximately $1 million remains available between the Capital Projects Fund and the Health & Life Safety Fund to support future facility improvements and capital needs. He reported that the initial FY27 budget has been completed and will be presented to the board for review.

The meeting also took place on Dr. Brooks’ last day on the job at Wethersfield. On July 1 he took over as superintendent of Knoxville CUSD #202.

Wethersfield Education Association president Amy Bryan and Board of Education president Steve Newman both thanked Dr. Brooks for all he has done for the teachers, staff and students at Wethersfield over the past four years each said they look forward to working with new superintendent Kurtis Smyth who officially took over Wednesday, July 1.

Also during the meeting:

— Steve Newman reported on a recent co-op meeting with Annawan counterparts to discuss the transition plan for the girls basketball team. Annawan dropped girls basketball last season due to lack of numbers. This season Annawan girls who want to participate in basketball will play on the Wethersfield team this coming season with the team transitioning to an Annawan-Wethersfield Titans team in 2027-28. Newman expressed optimism that the co-operative program will continue to grow and noted that an additional six incoming AHS freshmen girls are expected to participate next year, helping to strengthen and sustain the program moving forward.

— The board also approved the $11,275 bid from Legend Carpentry of Kewanee to replace drop ceilings in two classrooms this summer.
