The Goodfellow’s Christmas Basket operation is already underway, and the Goodfellow Christmas Basket Club is now accepting applications and nominations for basket recipients.
The Key Club tradition of organizing, creating and delivering the baskets began back in 1969 when a man named James Whisker met KHS teacher Amron Buchanan. At that time, the corner of Buchanan’s classroom was piled with canned goods that the students had collected for a food drive. Whisker had come to the the high school to talk about his daughter’s biology grade. Instead, a discussion arose between Buchanan and Whisker about the canned goods in the corner, with the teacher admitting they were unsure of how to distribute them. That’s when Whisker mentioned his Good Fellow’s Christmas Basket program.
Buchanan not only gifted him the canned goods, but the two struck a delivery deal that would form a lasting partnership between the Good Fellow’s and the KHS Key Club, of which Buchanen was an advisor.
For over four decades, the Good Fellow’s Christmas baskets have been delivered to area residents in need, just in time for Christmas.
The baskets contain items such as soups, hams, peanut butter, beans, tuna, and spaghetti sauce. This year, the baskets will be delivered to hundreds of residents on Dec. 20.
The deadline for the basket nominations and applications is Dec. 8. To apply or nominate someone, contact the Kewanee High School at (309) 853-3328.
