Kewanee residents will have an opportunity to dispose of large household items during the city’s annual cleanup event, scheduled for June 6 from 7 a.m. to noon. A rain date is set for June 13. The event is open only to city residents, who must show a photo ID and a copy of their utility bill to participate.
The drop‑off site will be at the former Kewanee Hospital property at West Division and Rockwell streets. Vehicles must be hand‑unloadable, and participants should be prepared to unload items themselves.
Drivers should enter Elliott Street from West Prospect Street, continue south, then turn west onto West Division Street. IDs and utility bills will be checked on the south side of the parking lot. Those without the required documentation will be directed safely out of the cleanup area. After unloading, vehicles will exit west on Pine Street.
Accepted items include mattresses, furniture, yard furniture, water heaters, appliances, metal items, scrap wood, carpet, toilets and other miscellaneous junk. Paint will be accepted only if lids are removed and the contents are fully dried; cat litter may be used to dry paint.
Moore Tires will again partner with the city to collect passenger and light‑truck tires. Tires must be free of debris and off the rims. Each household may bring up to eight tires. The first 125 tires will be accepted at no charge; after that threshold, a fee of $3.90 per tire will apply, payable on site.
Items that will not be accepted include electronics, toxic materials, liquid paint, cleaning solvents, motor oil, batteries, landscape waste, slate siding, shingles, concrete, brick, masonry, railroad ties, construction or demolition debris and roofing materials.
Residents with questions about acceptable items may contact City Hall at 309‑852‑2611.
