Black Hawk College is proud to support The Kewanee Voice, a non-profit, free, digital news publication that has quickly become a trusted source of local information for the Kewanee area.
“We’re excited to support this local effort and look forward to seeing it continue to thrive,” said Kim Nordstrom Goodley, associate vice president for external relations at Black Hawk College and executive director of the Black Hawk College East Foundation.

“Having a trusted, consistent source like The Kewanee Voice is invaluable to our community,” Nordstrom Goodley said.
As the college continues its mission to provide accessible, affordable and high-quality education, The Kewanee Voice is a key partner in helping reach and engage the community.
“Black Hawk College East Campus has educated generations of families in our community – including my own,” she said.
As a champion for educational access, workforce development and community connection, Black Hawk College recognizes the critical role The Kewanee Voice plays in informing, celebrating and uniting the region.
“The Kewanee Voice allows us the opportunity to share student achievements, introduce new programs to the community, and remind residents that their community college is here for them,” she said.
With deep roots in Henry County, Black Hawk College began offering classes at the Kewanee Armory in 1967 before opening East Campus near Galva in 1971.
In the 2000s, the college expanded downtown with the BHC Community Education Center and the BHC Welding & Skilled Trades Center, further strengthening its local presence and commitment to local workforce partners.
The Kewanee Voice launched its digital news site in May of 2023 as a response to a news desert created by the lack of local news reporting and journalism. Founded by Mike Berry and Susan DeVilder, the online digital publication covers not only local news, sports, events and government bodies, but covers news from other communities such as Galva and Bishop Hill.
Voice Publisher Mike Berry said he’s grateful to Black Hawk College for their support for the Voice’s mission of delivering local news to the community.
“As a non-profit news organization that relies on donations, sponsorships, grants and advertising, we are deeply appreciative of any local organization who sees the value of our mission and joins us in ensuring we can accomplish it,” he said. “Black Hawk College is a valuable part of our community and a valuable partner of The Kewanee Voice.”
