KHS soccer team ties with Alleman

In a game which their coach said was “bittersweet,” Kewanee High School’s soccer team played Rock Island Alleman to a 3-3 tie Thursday.

Following a 5-0 loss to Mendota the day before, Coach Jose Bermudez said, “The Boilermakers didn’t want another defeat, they came to the match with the mentality of winning again against a very strong team like Alleman.”

“They are a very strong and very fast team, so it wasn’t easy for Kewanee,” the coach added.

Cristian Cazares scored for the Boilers just eight minutes into the game, but Alleman then scored twice to take a 2-1 lead.

“The Boilermakers pushed so hard and it paid off,” Bermudez said, as goals by James Roginski and Alonso Corral put Kewanee ahead 3-2.

But two minutes before the end of the match, Alleman tied the game 3-3.

“That’s why it was a bittersweet taste, it looked like we were going to win,” Bermudez said.

Cazares and Tony Moran each had an assist and goalie Dillon Price made 11 saves. Kewanee had 10 shots during the game.
