
Following an 85-minute closed session, the Wethersfield Board of Education voted at its March meeting to expel a sophomore student from Wethersfield High School for a period of two years.
The vote was unanimous with all seven board members voting to affirm the move.
According to the motion, the student, identified only as “Student A,” the expulsion extends from March 13, 2025, to March 13, 2027. It was stipulated that the student may petition to return to school at the end of the 2025-2026 school year if they have attended the Excel Alternative School in Atkinson and has the recommendation to return to Wethersfield from the Excel administration.
The student’s name and the reason for the expulsion were not included in the motion which was made and voted on in the board’s open session.
During the public comment portion of the agenda in the open meeting a parent spoke about experiences she has had in the district related to her children. She requested that her address be released from the district so that her students could attend elsewhere and asked for a response to her request from the board.
In other business, Superintendent Dr. Andrew Brooks reported that the school district has again been awarded the catering contract for the annual shutdown at the CHS ethanol plant in Annawan. He said it is anticipated that the contract will bring in roughly $48,000 which will be used for flooring and cabinet upgrades in the cafeteria kitchen.
“Many thanks and congratulations to Ladosha Bystry (cafeteria supervisor) and her kitchen crew,” said Dr. Brooks.
He also announced that the Rotary Club of Kewanee has once again donated funds to provide every third grade student with a new book this spring. The donation is an annual project of the club.
“We appreciate the Rotary contribution and the impact it will have on literacy for our students,” said Dr. Brooks.
In action on personnel, Tricia Lay was approved as National Honor Society sponsor and Kyria Eastman as K-Kids sponsor for the 2025-2026 school year.
The board accepted the resignation of Aaron Pratt as assistant boys’ basketball coach.
