
As the nation celebrates its birth, area organizations and volunteers are working to provide residents with several ways to celebrate. Music, fun and plenty of fireworks are all planned to make the day more exciting. Here are just a few of the area activities to help residents enjoy the holiday.
The Francis Park Festival will kick off Independence Day at 9 a.m. The festival will feature food booths that include breakfast options, music provided by 3D Sound, a tractor show and the annual Street Cruisers Car Club Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show. A new addition to the festival will be valve-cover races. The flea and craft market also will be held.
Activities are scheduled at Francis Park through 3 p.m.
The Kewanee Fireworks Show will take place on Thursday, July 4 at Northeast Park. The band, High Jinx will start off the evening with a performance at 7:30 p.m. During the day, a free swim will be offered at Northeast Park Family Oasis Aquatic Center. Refreshments will be available to purchase from the park concession stand. The fireworks display will burst onto the scene at dusk around 9:30 or 9:45 p.m.
Galva Freedom Fest will begin on Wednesday, July 3 with an annual pork chop dinner at Wiley Park from 5 to 7 p.m. The Galva Arts Council Art Jam blacktop painting will take place in the park on July 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. A garden tractor pull starts at 6 p.m. behind the River Valley COOP. The Freedom Fest beer tent will be held at the park beginning at 8 p.m.
On Thursday, July 4, the day begins with a 5K run. The Lions Club will hold an annual breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. An antique tractor show begins at 10 a.m. Lunch in Wiley Park is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a parade starts at noon.
Afternoon activities include tours of the Old Red Farm Shed and a kiddie tractor pull for children 10 and under at 2 p.m.
Evening festivities include food, a dunk tank and the Presentation of Colors by the Galva American Legion at 7 p.m. The National Anthem will be performed at 9 p.m. followed by the famous Galva fireworks display.
On Sunday, July 7, the Galva Ministerial Association will hold its annual community church service in Wiley Park at 11 a.m.
The Cernovich Fireworks Display, sponsored by Cernovich’s Salvage, has become an annual event and will take place at dusk on Friday, July 5 on Red Adams Road.
