Kewanee Care lends hand to raise money for Kewanee fireworks fund

By The Kewanee Voice    June 25, 2024

With the cost of this year’s Kewanee fireworks display predicted to top $15,000, organizations and businesses are chipping in to do their part. The Kewanee Care Nursing Home is no exception and announced a BBQ Fundraiser set for Wednesday, June 26.

The BBQ stand will be selling both brats and ribeye sandwiches in front of JoJo’s Convenient Store, located at 501 N. Main St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For $7, residents can drop by and get a brat, chips and a soda. Ribeye steak sandwiches with chips and soda will be sold for $10 a plate.

The funds raised will benefit the fireworks display sponsored by the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce and held annually at Northeast Park on July 4.

The nursing home is just one of the businesses assisting the KCOC to raise money. Chamber Executive Director Mark Mikenas has sent letters to area businesses asking for donations and Save-a-lot is also holding a customer change roundup. Several other area businesses have held fundraising events as well.

The Kewanee fireworks used for the display are purchased each year through J&M Displays, and in 2024, that cost was $14,000, an increase over the previous year. In 2024, Mikenas said he expects the price to reach over $15,000.
