The Kewanee Area United Way’s newest project, “Shoes For Kids 2024” will get a boost after the Kewanee Elks recently presented the organization with a check for $2,000.
The KAUW announced the project in March and asked for local help in raising funds. The goal of Shoes For Kids is to provide shoes to area students in both school districts.
The initial phase will give shoes to kids in need for Pre-K through third grade in Kewanee School District and Wethersfield, as well as Head Start. Students eligible for the shoes are at or below 100% of the FPL.
At the time of the announcement, Executive Director Linda Blair said that wouldn’t be enough to eliminate the need for shoes in the community, but it would make a dent in it.
On average 75% of students attending the Kewanee public school system qualify for free or reduced lunches. Not all of those students need shoes but a higher than normal percentage will need help in acquiring footwear. The KAUW thanked Breedlove’s Sporting Goods for assisting them in acquiring shoes at a cost and to 360SA, which helped the agency collect data to finalize details on shoe delivery.
The Kewanee Elks partners with organizations in the community such as the KAUW, the food pantry, the Salvation Army, and Freedom House, by fundraising. The shoe project is just the latest donation made by the Kewanee Elks, which has raised millions to benefit the community and its youth.
