The Wethersfield Lady Geese defeated Putnam County Thursday night in the championship match of the Class 1A Putnam County Regional, 25-16, 25-21.
With the win, the Lady Geese move on to Monday’s Princeville Sectional semifinals where they’ll face Illini Bluffs at 6 pm.
The top four seeds held on both sides of the Princeville Sectional Complex bracket. In the top half of the bracket, the No. 1 seed Illini Bluffs will play the No. 2 seed, Wethersfield. In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 1 seed Annawan, will play the No. 2 seed, Monmouth (United).
“It was a great win on Putnam County’s home court, in front of a pretty rowdy crowd,” said Wethersfield Coach Tonya Vincent. “We played very solid the whole match and we didn’t get rattled when we were behind mid-way through the second set.”
“We found a way to find some holes on their side of the court in the second game. We played some really scrappy volleyball tonight.”
The Lady Geese (26-6-1) and Illini Bluffs (25-4-1) each have one tied match on the season. That tie is due to the fact that the two teams played each other Sept. 23 at the Knoxville Tournament (each team had a win of 25-15).
The winners of the two Princeville Sectional semifinal matches will play each other Wednesday at 6 pm in the sectional championship match.
