A donation from Kewanee Walmart will help complete a project that will give seniors access to online local news.

On Wednesday, Kewanee Walmart’s Store Manager, Jeremiah Parker, presented a 32” television, along with a keyboard and mouse to Kewanee Voice Board Chair TD Welch. The donation of the electronics will go towards creating a “news nook” at the Henry County Senior Citizens Center.

The Kewanee Voice has an office at the center and last month, a senior inquired as to how he could read the news. Board Chair Welch reached out to Kewanee Supt. Dr. Christopher Sullens to see if the school district had any extra computers. The hope was to set up areas in the center for seniors to be able to get online and read The Kewanee Voice.

Two weeks ago, Supt. Sullens and IT Director Mike Perva delivered several Chromebooks to the center, but the screens of the computers are smaller and Perva suggested that a tv could be connected to the computer to allow for easier viewing.

On Tuesday, a coach from Walmart contacted The Kewanee Voice to tell them that Walmart would be glad to help out with both a tv and a keyboard.

Every year, Kewanee Walmart provides about $7,000 in grants to the community, along with multiple donations made to organizations and nonprofits. The donated tv will be used in the lobby of the senior center and seniors without access to computers or internet may view their local news online.
