A six-year-old juvenile was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to their left hand following an early morning incident on Sunday.
According to the Kewanee Police Department, officers responded to reports of a gunshot victim in the 400 block of Rice Street at approximately 7:15 am. Police spoke to witnesses on the scene and learned that a vehicle had just left the area at a high rate of speed. A short time later, officers were informed that a private vehicle had driven the victim to OSF St. Luke Hosptial.
Once at the hospital, the officers located the gunshot victim, who turned out to be a 6-year-old child. Kewanee Police detectives and Crime Scene Technicians were called in to assist the officers with the investigation, which included gathering statements and an execution of a search warrant. Evidence was collected from a residence in the 400 block of Rice Street.
The initial investigation seems to point to the juvenile having access to a hand gun in their residence. One round was discharged into the child’s left hand. The KPD is still investigating this incident and anyone with information is urged to call (309) 853-1911.
