If you’re interested in becoming a firefighter, the city of Kewanee is looking for you.
The Kewanee Fire Department is taking applications to test for placement on the department’s hiring list.
The department serves the residents, businesses, and visitors of Kewanee in fire protection, emergency medical services (EMS), and hazardous materials emergency response.
All new firefighters will be trained in firefighting at an accredited fire academy and will also be trained to the level of paramedic in EMS.
As an employee of the department, candidates will be able to join Kewanee Firefighters Local 513, the union that represents full-time firefighters in the city. Through the collective bargaining agreement, new employees will receive a starting salary of up to $53,000 including 14 paid holidays as well as opportunities for voluntary overtime.
Kewanee firefighters receive vacation, personal, sick/injury, and compensatory time as well as medical, dental, and vision insurance for themselves and any qualifying family members. They are enrolled in the Illinois Downstate pension system, Article 4, and will have the option of enrolling in a 457-employee contribution retirement fund.
The Kewanee Fire Department has a residency requirement of within 25 air miles of the Kewanee city limits.
“The Kewanee Fire Department has a proud tradition of delivering the best public service to our customers and looks forward to the addition of new employees to continue that trend,” Fire Chief Stephen Welgat said.
