The official kickoff of construction of the clubhouse addition to the Baker Park clubhouse will be Tuesday afternoon.

Work has already begun on the project. Several large trees have been cut down on the lot east of the existing clubhouse where the addition will be built.

The groundbreaking for the project will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Baker Park.

The addition will include a large space for events, and a sports simulator. A new parking lot will be built along 11th Street behind the addition.

The new construction will connect to the east side of the clubhouse, where improvements will also be part of the project.

Park district director Andrew Dwyer said the project will cost “right around $4 million.” The park district will use bond funds to pay for the work.

“We want to make it affordable for the community.” Dwyer said. “We’re excited to have the groundbreaking and get started on the project.”

The new facility will be open year-round and will have plenty of seating for receptions, banquets and other events.

A golf simulator that’s planned for the addition will also offer visitors a chance to take part in a number of other “outdoor” sports and activities.

Dwyer said the construction work will begin this fall, and will continue as long as the weather allows.

The job is scheduled for completion next May.
