Free tutoring returns to Central Jr. High

By The Kewanee Voice    September 9, 2026

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Sunshine Community Services Center will start fall sessions of the Step Ladder Tutoring Program. The program will run after school at Central Jr. High School and is available for seventh and eighth grade students.

The goal of the tutoring program is to help students increase homework completion, strengthen study skills and ultimately reach their full potential. Students can expect to improve skills in core subjects such as reading and math and improve their attitude toward school and learning overall.

The Step Ladder Tutoring Program is completely free of charge, and there are also scholarships available. Books, snacks and school supplies as needed will be provided at the program.

The program will run every Monday through Thursday from September to May. Tutoring begins promptly at 2:50 p.m. and will let out at 4:15 p.m.

If a student has not been previously enrolled, parents or guardians will need to complete enrollment forms. For more information and for enrollment call 309-853-7751, email stepladder@sunshinecsc.com or visit www.sunshinecsc.com. The Step Ladder Tutoring Program also has a Facebook page with additional information.

The program will also be holding an online donation drive to contribute toward their goal of helping one child at a time. Donations can be made online at their website, through GoFundMe at Helping one child at a time – Step Ladder Tutoring or can be mailed to P.O. Box 405, Kewanee, IL, 61443.
