Fire Chief lifts burn ban

By The Kewanee Voice    July 3, 2023

The recent rainfall and milder conditions has led the Kewanee Fire Chief to lift the ban on both burning and fireworks.

“This will permit residents to have backyard fire pits and small fires for recreational purposes. This will also allow the use of small fireworks such as sparklers, smoke bombs and snakes,” reads a press release from Kewanee Fire Chief Stephen Welgat.

But Kewanee disallows other fireworks, the release said, and any fireworks that aren’t allowed in city limits will continue to be disallowed, and their use will still be subject to the ordinance violations.

The ban on fireworks and open burning was first implemented in June because of concern over the severe drought conditions and the fate of local professional fireworks were uncertain. Last week, the KFD made the decision to allow professional fireworks displays.

The Cernovich fireworks display is held every year on Red Adams Road, but a storm was predicted, and the fireworks display scheduled for Saturday, July 1, was postponed until Labor Day weekend.

The Kewanee Fireworks Spectacular is set for July 4 at Northeast Park. The display will begin at approximately 9:30 pm.
