This week’s spotlight is on Mabel, a tan‑and‑white, 5‑year‑old terrier mix who brings the spark of a puppy wrapped in the steadiness of a mature dog.
She arrived at the shelter in early May after local police found her alone on Kewanee’s north side with no collar or microchip. After completing her required hold at the pound, she’s now settling in at the shelter and waiting—politely—for her forever home.
At 24.5 pounds, Mabel may look a touch older at first glance, but her personality tells a different story. She’s a live wire in the best way: curious, social and always ready to trot outside to run the fence line with her shelter mates. While she hasn’t had direct, up‑close playtime with other dogs yet, her calm, friendly demeanor through the fence makes it clear she’s comfortable with dogs of all sizes.
Mabel is great on a leash, too. She enjoys long walks with our dog walker and never shows aggression toward the squirrels and birds she encounters along the way. When she first arrived, she was a quiet girl who rarely barked. She has since picked up a bit of vocal enthusiasm—thanks to one of her more talkative buddies—but she mostly joins in only when he does.
She is fully vetted, including being spayed, vaccinated for rabies, Bordetella and distemper/parvo, microchipped, flea‑treated and dewormed.
If you’re looking for a no‑frills, well‑mannered companion who’s ready to fit seamlessly into your life, Mabel may be the perfect match.
Call the shelter at 309‑852‑0040 or stop in during visiting hours to meet her. We have a feeling you won’t want to leave without this sweet, captivating girl. Her adoption fee is $100.
