Titans claim fifth straight LTC baseball crown

The Annawan-Wethersfield baseball team claimed its fifth straight Lincoln Trail Conference total Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Bureau Valley.

In game one, the Titans dramatically took the game, with a 6-5 walk-off victory over the Storm. The game was tied at five in the bottom of the eighth when Jaton Huber doubled, scoring one run.

The Titans opened the scoring in the first after an error scored one run. A double by Drake Taylor gave the  Storm the lead, 2-1, in the top of the third.

Myer Heitzler singled to center field, which helped the Titans tie the game at two in the bottom of the third.

The Titans took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Dane Ross singled to center and Maddux Heitzler popped into a fielder’s choice, each scoring one run.

The Storm tied the game in the top of the seventh on a walk by Brandon Carrington, a single by Logan Philhower and a single by Taylor.

The Titans’ starting pitcher, Pierce Childs, allowed three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out eight and walking two. Maddux Heitzler appeared in relief for the Titans.

In the bottom of the eighth, Huber hit a powerful double, bringing in the winning run. 

Game two held a lot of tension. The Titans ultimately came out ahead with a final score of 2-0.

For starters, the Titans got on the board in the third inning when Nic Thurston singled, scoring the only two runs of the game. 

Thurston provided pop in the middle of the lineup and went 1-for-2 on the day. Maddux Heitzler and Thurston each collected one hit and Heitzler stole three bases. The Titans stole five bases in the game. 

The Titans turned one double play in the game and committed no errors. Aaden Verstraete had the most chances in the field with six.

Next up for the Titans is a game at Morrison to face the Mustangs on Wednesday.
