On Saturday, May 2, hundreds of residents gathered to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage at the Cinco de Mayo Festival at Northeast. Sunny skies and pleasant temperatures made the perfect day to host the celebration.

Attendees browse the vendors and order food.
Sav’s Sweets sold cakes and other treats to attendees.

Local restaurants and food company owners set up food stands throughout the park, bringing a mix of authentic Mexican recipes and classic American foods and featured everything savory and sweet.

Some attendees wore clothing and hats to celebrate the day.
Vendors sold handcrafted items.

The celebration was made kid friendly with activities like bounce houses, balloon art, games, raffles and more, showcasing the importance of involving kids to learn about their heritage and culture.

Trece de Junio performed during the event.

Live music was enjoyed by all from groups like Trece de Junio and DJ Cano, featuring tambarazo music.

This event was chaired by Adri Landeros, commissioner of the Kewanee Commission on Human Relations, and made possible with the help of the Cinco de Mayo Committee.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office sent a deputy, Stephanie Martinez, to represent the department at the event.
Decorations gave the event a festive feel.

The event was expanded this year in the hopes of bringing in more attendees, organizers said.
