KHS softball team loses to Riverdale, Geneseo

Kewanee High School’s varsity softball team dropped two games late last week.

The Boilermakers couldn’t keep up with Riverdale and fell 9-2 on Friday. Then on Saturday they were defeated 7-4 by Geneseo.

Against Riverdale, the Boilermakers got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Macee Pickering singled to center field, and Rylee Blades grounded out, each scoring one run.

Riverdale took the lead with home runs in the top of the third and fourth innings. 

A solo home run to right field by Claire Beeler gave Riverdale the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth.

A grand slam to center field in the top of the sixth for the Rams extended the lead and another home run in the final inning put the game out of reach for the Boiler Girls. 

Audrey Clucas opened the game for Kewanee. The hurler surrendered nine hits and eight runs over six innings, striking out one and walking two. 

Emme DeBlaey started in the circle for Riverdale, allowing five hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.

Blades and Pickering were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Kewanee. Remy Hicks, Kieryn Abernathy, Pickering, Aaliyah Swearingen and Dani Jo Currier each collected one hit for Kewanee. The Boilermakers didn’t commit a single error in the field.

Riverdale collected 11 hits in the game.

On Saturday, Kewanee came up short Against Geneseo, 7-4.

Geneseo got on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on a two-RBI single and a ground out.

Geneseo added one run in the second on a single to center field.

Lyric Duytschaver pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief for Kewanee. The reliever allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out none and walking none. 

Dani Jo Currier started for Kewanee Varsity, giving up up five hits and four runs (three earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking none.

Kewanee tallied 10 hits in the game. Duytschaver and Currier each collected two hits while Remy Hicks, Addy Yepsen and Rylee Blades each drove a run.

Geneseo piled up a whopping 15 hits in the game and amassed five stolen bases.

Kewanee plays at home on Monday against conference foe Hall.
