Drought conditions could spell doom for Kewanee fireworks display

By Susan DeVilder    June 22, 2023

Drought isn’t only affecting farmer’s growing season and residents’ gardens and lawns, but now, it could put a wrench in the annual Fourth of July fireworks display in Kewanee.

Effective immediately, Kewanee Fire Chief Stephen Welgat has announced he is instituting a ban on all open burning and fireworks use in Kewanee. This ban includes all types of burning and all types of fireworks.

The decision on whether to allow a professional display won’t be made until Tuesday, June 27. The decision will then be announced, according to a press release issued by the City.

The Kewanee Fireworks display is set for Tuesday, July 4 at Northeast Park. The Kewanee Chamber of Commerce has been actively raising the roughly $14,000 needed for the professional pyrotechnics by J & M Display.

The Kewanee Voice will provide more information as it becomes available.
