KHS golf team places third in home match

Kewanee High School’s boys golf team was in action at Baker Park Thursday against Sherrard and Mendota.

“It was a little rougher night with the team as they shot a 191, which did not allow them to beat either school,” Coach Brett VanDeWostine said.

“We were however, two strokes behind the Sheard team,” he said.

“Each of the varsity guys saw one or two shots that they left on the course that could’ve helped us beat them. But that’s the tough thing about golf is anybody can win on any given day,” VanDeWostine said.

Team scores were: Owen Laue 47, Reid Nichols 45, Jack Anderson 51, Lincoln Throneburg 52, James McGarvey 54 and Easton Blake 48.

This was Kewanee’s last nine-hole event of the year. The team is now focusing on all of its 18-hole events.

Kewanee travels to Princeton Saturday for their invite, then goes back to Princeton on Tuesday for the conference championship tournament.

The JV boys shot a 204 which allowed them to beat Sherrard, but lose to Mendota. Jaxon DeReu ad a great night on the course shooting a 46.

“He is a golfer who did not go out last year, but continues to work and see improvement each round,” the coach said.

The JV boys will be in competition next Monday as they go to Hidden Lake. Then they will travel to Princeton next Wednesday. These will both be 18-hole events.

The girls were in action at Wyanton Hills in Princeton against Erie-Prophetstown, Sterling and Princeton. Charlotte Burkhart and Sophie Hamilton each shot a 57, which shows they are continuing to improve.

“Very proud of these young ladies as they keep coming each day to get better and better,” VanDeWostine said.
