Here’s what’s planned this month at the library

Library’s Area Art Show: 150th Anniversary Edition

This year will be bigger and better thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library and in celebration of the library’s 150th anniversary. Artists of all kinds are invited to enter, even if they live outside of the Kewanee Public Library District. Entries from sculptors, painters, photographers, fiber artists and other fields will be accepted.

Submissions can be dropped off at the main circulation desk on the first floor Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.  Stop by for an entry form, or get one online from the library website, and bring it in along with your artwork. Entries are limited to six per person. Due to limited space there are size restrictions for artwork. Details can be found on the entry forms and the art show brochures.

Judging will be on Oct. 6, with winners announced during 150th-anniversary party at 6 p.m. Oct. 8. The art show will be opened at that time and run through Oct. 15. 

Investing and Financial Planning Series – Sept. 9and 23

On Sept. 9 learn how to Outsmart the Scammers. Learn how to spot the red flags, what resources you can use if you fall victim to fraud and steps you can take to protect yourself. 

The program on Sept. 23 is Retirement by Design, which covers turning your retirement dreams into reality by setting tangible goals. Both programs begin at 2 p.m.

Personalized cute kid bookmarks craft – Sept, 18 at 5 p.m.

Bring a picture of your cute kid printed on plain paper and turn it into a unique bookmark featuring your picture on the tassel. If you don’t have a printer, email us the picture ahead of time and we’ll print it for you. Registration is required.

Navigating the Mental Health Maze with Beth Looney – Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.

The post-pandemic world has seen mental health professionals become busier than ever, but the quest for help remains hard to navigate alone. Beth Looney, OSF mental health navigator, will tell about her role as a mental health navigator, services available locally and how to find help for yourself or a loved one.

Young Adult Programming

On Sept. 12 from 3-5 p.m. anyone between 13 and 18 can stop by the Young Adult room on the lower level to play games games on the gaming television. Snacks will be served.

On Sept. 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. the Young Adult Craft Club will meet. 

Youth Programming

Stop by Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. for story time. Library staff is taking a short break from story times to make they have everything ready for the school year, but will be back on Sept. 16. 

Facebook Story Time will also go live before our Tuesday Story Time at 10:15 a.m. Those who can’t attend can watch the video whenever it fits their schedule.

Students in grades four through six may attend Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 5:30 p.m. when the group will read “The BFG” by Roald Dahl a chapter or two at a time and discuss the story as it progresses. Students may bring drinks and snacks or enjoy the snacks provided by the library. No registration is required.  

Two drop-in crafts are planned this month. Elementary-age children may stop in Sept. 10-12  between 2 and 6 pm or Sept. 13 from 9 am to 1 pm to make their own marble maze. Preschoolers can stop in Sept. 24-26between 2 and 6 p.m. or Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a leaf paint scrape craft.  

Mini art gallery grab and go kits are available throughout September.  Preschoolers through sixth graders may take home a mini canvas or clay kit to create their own art project. Their work will be displayed in the youth department art gallery throughout the art show. Projects should be taken to the desk on the second floor before Oct. 8.  

Adult Book Club – Sept. 15 at 2 and 6 p.m.

The group we discuss Canary Girls by Jennifer Chiaverini.  There will be meetings at 2 and 6 p.m. Those attending should use the elevator entrance on First Street. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Information Services desk on the lower level.  

Next month the group will be reading The Book of Hope: A Guide for Trying Times by Kane Goodall.

Recipe Round-Up – Sept. 9 at noon

To join, find a recipe matching the theme of the month.  Cook it, and bring it, along with copies of your recipe, to share when we meet. The theme for this month is soup. Kim Gehling, recipe columnist for The Kewanee Voice, will be the special guest. 

Digital Literacy Class 

Available topics are Essential Computer Skills, Essential Software Skills, and Technology Tools in Daily Life. Those with more specific questions may stop in during the class and library staff will work with them to figure it out. Classes are now by appointment; call at 309-852-4505 and ask for the Information Services desk.

Creativity @ the Carnegie

Fiber projects such as knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cross stitch or quilting are the topic from 4-6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the Community Room. This is an adult group sponsored by the Friends of the Kewanee Public Library for those who would like to enjoy the comradery of others while creating their own fiber projects.
