KEWANEE WEATHER

What’s happening at the library this month?

By The Kewanee Voice    July 7, 2025

Native Pollinators with Leslie Anthony – Tuesday, July 15 @ 2 p.m.

Did you know that, according to the National Park Service, pollinators are responsible for one out of every three bites of food you take each day? Native pollinators are vital to the health of our ecosystem and the health of many of our crops, but their habitats are shrinking.

Leslie Anthony of the University of Illinois Extension will be at the library to discuss the native pollinators of Illinois and how to make your landscape attractive to them.

Bastille Day – The Spark of Revolution watch party

Join staff on Monday, July 14, at 11 a.m. in the Community Room for a free one-hour online lecture and Q&A to learn about Bastille Day. This free lecture explores the true significance of La fête nationale française, what we refer to as Bastille Day, from the storming of the Bastille in 1789 to its role in shaping modern France. Join Nettah Yoeli-Rimmer to examine how the day evolved from revolutionary upheaval to an official national holiday, the debates over its meaning and how it is celebrated in France today.

Rules of the Road for Investing – July 22 @ 2 p.m.

The road to financial independence can be intimidating without a map.  A representative from Edward Jones will be at the library to teach some “rules of the road.” Attendees can learn the most common investing mistakes, how to avoid them, investment strategies that will help you reach your long-term goals, and what they need to stay on track.

Shark Bites and a Movie – July 10 @ 3:30 p.m. and 29 @ 10:30 a.m.

Grab a bigger boat and prepare for a frightful good time. With Shark Week fast approaching, staff couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to watch the movie that started it all. The staff will test your knowledge with some real-life and Jaws lore for a chance to win fun prizes, serve some shark-themed snacks, and have a shark-themed craft for you to work on while watching the movie.  Anyone 13 and over is invited.

Exploring the Library Catalog – July 31 at 5 p.m.

Make the most out of your library.  Join staff for a hands-on tutorial where you’ll learn how to search the library catalog like a pro, whether using the website or mobile app. Library staff will show you how to do everything in our catalog from a simple search for an item to making a reading list and tracking your borrowing history. This class is perfect for beginners or anyone looking to get more comfortable with the library’s digital tools. Bring your device or follow along on the library’s computers. Staff will be available for one-on-one help after the session.

DIY Coasters Craft for Adults – July 24 at 5 p.m.

Join staff and put your love of words and creativity to good use in this fun and functional DIY craft night. Join in for a relaxing evening, where you’ll create your own set of custom Scrabble tile drink coasters — perfect for your coffee table, home bar, or as a unique handmade gift. The library will provide you everything you need to put together your own set, so whether you’re a word nerd, a board game lover, or just in it for the crafting fun, this event is sure to be a hit.

Young Adult Programming

Get creative and make something truly unique at our Mosaic Workshop. In this hands-on session, you’ll make a mosaic flower pot and learn the basics of mosaic art — choosing colors, shaping pieces, and designing your own dazzling creation. Whether you’re into abstract patterns, symbols, or nature-inspired designs, you’ll take home a one-of-a-kind work of art. Don’t forget to join them July 7 at 1 p.m.  All materials are provided, and no experience is needed — just bring your imagination. This workshop is perfect for anyone who loves DIY, crafts, or trying something new.

Get ready for gaming, snacks and hanging out with friends.  On July 11 from 1-2:30 p.m. anyone between 13 and 18 can stop into the Young Adult room on the library’s lower level. Different games on the library’s gaming television are planned. And to top it off, lots of snacks to enjoy will be provided.

Calling all creative minds. Are you interested in creating arts and crafts while hanging out with friends and meeting new people?  Then join staff July 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. for our Young Adult Craft Club.  It’s the perfect way to spend a “crafternoon” with friends.

Youth Programming

Baby and Preschool Storytime continues this month. Infants through preschool age children and their adults are invited to attend Storytime Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m. Stick around afterward for Sidewalk Chalk and Bubble Time.

If you can’t make it in person, catch their story time live on Facebook at 1 p.m. the same day.  If you’re interested in the Music and Movement Storytime, stop in Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. and let’s get moving.

We’ll be wrapping up our Summer Reading craft series this month. Elementary-age children are invited to stop in July 2 and 3 from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, July 5 from 10 a.m. to noon to make a Minecraft Perler Bead craft. For preschool aged patrons, stop in July 9, 10, 11 or 12 during the library’s open hours, to make our DIY I-spy bottle craft.

Adult Book Club – July 21 at 2 and 6 p.m.

The next meeting date of the Adult Book Club is July 21, where participants will be discussing The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post by Alison Pataki. As always, staff will hold two meetings; you’re invited to attend whichever time works the best for you. They ask that anyone attending the evening meeting please enter the building through the elevator entrance on First Street. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Information Services desk on the lower level. If you can’t make the meeting this month, next month we will be reading The Mystery Guest by Nina Prose. Staff hopes to see you there.

Digital Literacy Class

Since there was still interest in the digital literacy classes, the library is bringing them back. Once again, available topics are Essential Computer Skills, which would be basic computer skills, Essential Software Skills, or office productivity skills, and Technology Tools in Daily Life, which will teach you practical computer skills. If you have a more specific question, you are welcome to stop in during the class and staff will work with you to figure it out. Classes are now by appointment, so give them a call at 309-852-4505 and ask for the Information Services desk to schedule yours today.
