Fundraising for the annual Kewanee Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular is already underway, said Mark Mikenas, executive director of the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce.

At Kewanee’s Save-A-Lot, customers can round-up their change to help pay for the fireworks. Donation canisters are on the counters of many shops and stores in town, and letters to businesses asking for contributions will be sent soon.

The cost for the display will be about the same as last year, Mikenas said. Last year’s fireworks cost around $14,000, up 35 percent from the previous year. But Mikenas said he doesn’t expect more than a five to 10% increase in the price, at least that’s what he’s been told.

In addition to raising money through donations, the KCOC will sell t-shirts with a patriotic fireworks logo again this year. Through Breedlove, Mikenas has acquired red shirts and the price for each is reasonable at just $10.

“We’ll take orders for them starting next week,” he said.

Anyone wishing to place an order for a t-shirt should either contact Mikenas at the chamber office or contact Gailyn Johnson at Johnson Appliance.

The annual firework celebration will once again be held at Northeast Park on Tuesday, July 4. The Kewanee Veterans Council will kick off the evening with the presentation of colors. A musical performance by a band, which has yet to be determined, will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Official remarks will be made at 9:30 p.m., followed by the start of the fireworks display at 9:45 p.m.

Donations for the annual fireworks display can be dropped off or mailed to the KCOC, 113 E. 2nd St., Kewanee.
