A Kewanee man has been arrested for a string of vehicle burglaries reported throughout the city in May.
Zachary Huffman, 21, is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card and burglary without causing damage. According to a news release issued by the Kewanee Police Department, additional charges are expected to be added as the case proceeds through the court system.
According to the release, police launched an investigation into a series of vehicle burglaries from May 14-30. As a result of that investigation, Huffman was identified and arrested.
He was initially issued a notice to appear in court under the provisions of Illinois law and released from custody. But while waiting for his court date, Huffman, the police say, committed another vehicle burglary.
On May 30, police officers located him in connection with the new incident. During that contact with him, Huffman was found to be in possession of a firearm. Because of his pretrial release conditions, and with the approval of the Henry County State’s Attorney’s Office, Huffman was taken into custody and transported to the Henry County Jail.
A preliminary hearing is set for June 9.
