Kewanee Pride Fest canceled for 2025, organizers hope for comeback next year

Since its debut in June 2023, the Kewanee Pride Fest has been an annual event, bringing people together to celebrate diversity and inclusion. But over the weekend, organizers took to social media to share some disappointing news—this year’s festival won’t be happening.

The first Kewanee Pride Fest took place on June 10, 2023, at Northeast Park, drawing a strong crowd despite a letter controversy leading up to the event. By 2024, organizers expanded the festival into a two-day celebration, adding more vendors, moving Saturday night festivities to the Chrome Gypsy Compound, and keeping Sunday’s daytime events—including a drag show—at Northeast Park.

When news of the cancellation broke online over the weekend, many people expressed their disappointment, with some asking for details and others offering ideas for an alternative event. Organizers responded with a statement, explaining their decision:

“This wasn’t easy for us, and we didn’t take it lightly. With some committee members stepping back and not enough new volunteers stepping up, it’s been tough to move forward. We thought about putting out one last call for help, but at this point, we just wouldn’t be able to put on the kind of event our community has come to expect.”

They also reassured their Facebook followers that no funds had been raised for this year’s Pride and that any money from previous years was still in the bank for future events.

Despite the setback, organizers made it clear they’re not giving up on Pride Fest:

“We’re already looking at ways to come back stronger next year. When the call for volunteers comes in 2026, we hope all those disappointed—and those offering help—will step up. Thank you for your support, love, and patience. THIS IS NOT THE END!”

Pride festivals, like the one organized in Kewanee, are planned across the country every June as part of National Pride Month, celebrating LGBTQ pride and the contributions of the community.
