Two Kewanee schools were placed in lockdown Friday after police received a report from the Fairview area of a person walking around and knocking on doors, while possessing what was described as a “long gun.”

According to a news release from the Kewanee Police department, the call came in at 11:42 a.m. Upon arrival, officers immediately began searching the area. As a safety measure, both Kewanee High School and Belle Alexander Elementary School were placed on lockdown.

Officers located the individual and determined that he was in possession of a BB gun, which he was returning to his residence after confiscating it from his child. Police say “there was no indication of criminal intent, and no threats were made toward the public.”

“The Kewanee Police Department takes all such reports seriously and appreciates the public’s continued attentiveness and cooperation in keeping our community safe,” the release said.
