The National Honor Society students at Wethersfield High School recently took on a colorful and meaningful project — repainting the elementary school’s blacktop to create a fun, educational space for younger students to enjoy for years to come.
The blacktop was originally painted several years ago, but after years of wear and tear, along with recent repaving, the once-bright games and designs had faded and become unusable. Recognizing the need to restore the space, NHS students stepped in with paint, creativity, and purpose.
What started as a Parent and Teacher Team (PATT) project was passed along to NHS after PATT stepped away from repainting. NHS members saw it as an opportunity to step up and make an impact.
“This project definitely aligns with the pillars of the NHS,” said NHS advisor Cathy Dana. “We provided service for the young people in our district by adding great color, educational games, and imagination to the playground.
“We took leadership because this was a PATT project originally, and when they decided not to redo the painting, we stepped up to add the images back to the blacktop. All of the students showed great character by really striving to do their best and make this something to be proud of for the younger Geese. I am so proud of all of them.”
The chapter added a wide variety of games and activity stations to make the space both fun and educational. New features include:
And the impact was almost instant — just a couple of hours after the final touches were complete, kids were already outside enjoying the new games. Laughter, energy, and color filled the playground again.

Superintendent Andrew Brooks shared in the student’s excitement.
“These students and staff members are rock stars. Thank you, NHS. The students were already enjoying it today,” he said.
This project not only gave NHS students a chance to serve their community but also allowed them to leave behind something lasting — a space that encourages learning, movement, and play. The elementary students now have a blacktop full of color, creativity, and opportunity, all thanks to the hard work and heart of the NHS members.
