In a heartwarming display of community spirit and compassion, the Wethersfield K-Kids organized a unique fundraiser that brought in hundreds of dollar that will benefit the Henry County Humane Society of Kewanee.

After brainstorming and researching various ideas, the elementary students decided to host a Pet Contest Fundraiser — an event that combined creativity, friendly competition and a genuine desire to help animals in need.

The idea for the Pet Contest Fundraiser emerged from the K-Kids’ commitment to making a positive impact locally. The group spent several weeks researching fundraising strategies that were both engaging and fun for the students.

The winners of the contests were, from left, Emme O’Connor, Emma Schiltz, Scout Rieker, Lyla Smith, Max Martinez, and Matteo Martinez.

Their dedication paid off when they landed on the concept of a pet contest, an event that would allow them to celebrate the pets they cherish while raising funds for a worthy cause.

Guided by their sponsor, Laura Evans, the K-Kids meticulously planned every detail — from entry fees to voting methods — ensuring the event was both successful and enjoyable.

Over 60 students participated by submitting pictures of their beloved pets. Each entry required a modest fee of $5, which helped to accumulate funds while also encouraging serious participation.

The contest attracted entries from a variety of pet owners, with pictures ranging from puppies and kittens to even a cow. The diverse range of entries not only highlighted the students’ love for animals but also demonstrated the community’s willingness to support the humane society.

To add an interactive twist to the event, the K-Kids organized a voting process where students could cast their ballots for their favorite pet. Instead of using traditional paper ballots, each vote was made by donating a quarter — a fun and innovative method that allowed every student to contribute directly to the fundraising effort.

The voting system was designed to be both simple and engaging. Each student’s quarter represented a vote, making the act of supporting their favorite pet a tangible way to contribute to the cause.

The funds collected through these votes were not only tokens of appreciation but also served as an essential part of the overall donation goal.

The table of pets was also set up at the Literary Night.

In addition to the entry fees and voting contributions, K-Kids members actively participated by collecting donations for the winners’ prizes. Their commitment ensured that the event had attractive rewards that recognized the effort and creativity of the participants.

The results of the contest were eagerly anticipated, and the winners were announced in several pet categories. The contest was split into categories based on the type of pet, allowing for fair competition among dogs, cats, and other animals.

Dogs:

• 1st Place: Jaxon Kelley with Darla & Dixie – $45.50

• 2nd Place: Max & Matteo with Coco

Cats:

• 1st Place: Emme O’Connor with Sky & Maggie – $24

• 2nd Place: Emma Schiltz with Cookie

Other Pets:

• 1st Place: Scout with a cow

• 2nd Place: Lyla with Mellie

Each category showcased the unique charm of the pets, and the generous donations affirmed the community’s commitment to both the event and the Kewanee Humane Society.

The Pet Contest Fundraiser was not just about competition — it was about coming together as a community to support a noble cause. The event was a success raising $645, and reflecting the dedication of the Wethersfield Elementary students and the community.

The funds raised will go directly to the Henry County Humane Society of Kewanee, contributing to the care and well-being of animals in need.

The event also served as a learning experience for the students. by teaching them lessons about teamwork, planning and the importance of supporting local causes.

Buoyed by the success of the Pet Contest Fundraiser, the Wethersfield K-Kids are already brainstorming ideas for future events. With the support of students, parents and staff, the K-Kids plan to continue their efforts in making a positive impact on their community.

The event not only provided financial assistance to the humane society but also fostered a spirit of kindness and civic responsibility among the young students.
