Voters in Illinois will go to the polls on April 1 for elections which determine the members of the units of government in their communities.
In Henry County, there is no competition in most of the races. For some offices, there aren’t as many candidates as there are open seats on a governing board.
Contested races in the Kewanee area are:
City Council: Incumbents Tyrone Baker and Steve Faber are challenged by three newcomers to local politics — Adam Cernovich, William “Scott” Withrow and Obrey Blumenshine.
Wethersfield School Board: In the incorporated area of the district, incumbents Paula Jo Baker and Stephen P. Newman are joined on the ballot by Andrew Verstraete. The top two vote-getters will be elected.
Allyson H. Schiltz and Angela Ryan, who represented the district’s unincorporated area, are running unopposed for re-election.
Kewanee School Board members Scott Steffen, Jeffey W. Johnson, Amy J. Dev and Lori Christiansen are running unopposed for re-election.
Black Hawk College Board of Trustees: Four candidates are running for two six-year terms. They are Kewaneean and former board member Jon Looney; Douglas Strand, who is vice chairman of the board; Mark Carlson; and Dougal Nelson.
Kewanee Township: Five candidates are running for four seats as township trustees: Democrats John M. Sovanski, Ted Sturtevant and Tom Kazubowski, and Republicans Mark S. Ouart and Chris DeVenney.
Township Supervisor Jon C. Jagers Clerk: Kendra A. Kazubowski, Road Commissioner Steve W. Dana and Assessor Jennifer Prescott are running unopposed for re-election.
Wethersfield Township: There are no contests here. Running unopposed are Daniel C. Duckworth for supervisor, Patricia Newman for town clerk, Daniel P. DeRycke for road commissioner, Daniel J. Kuffell for assessor and Mark D. Rose, Michael D. Nichols, Paul Ehnle and Steven J. Looney for trustees.
Kewanee Public Library District: There is a shortage of candidates for library board. John Sayers and Felisha Rogers are running for two of the four four-year terms opening up, and there is no candidate on the ballot for two years remaining on another board term.
Current board member Jessica Fornander’s name is not on the ballot, but she is running for re-election as a write-in candidate.
Kewanee Park District: Commissioners Jim Heberer and Stephen P. Brackett are running unopposed for four-year terms.
Village of Annawan: Incumbent Village President Tim Wise is opposed by Sarah Tenpenny.
City of Galva: There are three candidates for one four-year term for Ward Three alderman. Incumbent M. Douglas Anderson is opposed by Larry Ralph Lewis Clemons II and Sean A. O’Brien.
