Two arrested in Union Federal ATM burglary

Burglary suspects are now in custody after an investigation of a burglary at the ATM at Union Federal Savings and Loan, according to a press release from the Kewanee Police Department.

Yanis J. Garrido-Diaz, 31, and Enyerbe O. Rivera Chavez, 23, are charged with multiple preliminary offenses. Garrido-Diaz was arrested for burglary, a Class 2 felony, possession of burglary tools, a Class 4 felony, and no valid driver’s license. Chavez was arrested on charges of burglary and possession of burglary tools.

Police report that on Saturday, Feb. 22, at approximately 9:14 p.m., Kewanee police officers responded to an alarm in progress at the Union Federal ATM, located at 104 N. Tremont St.

Upon arrival, officers gathered information from a witness, which led to the identification of the suspect’s vehicle in the area.

An investigation was immediately initiated with the assistance of the Henry County Sheriff’s Department.

Garrido-Diaz and Chavez were identified and taken into custody without incident before being processed and transported to the Henry County Jail.

“The Kewanee Police Department remains committed to protecting our community and ensuring those who engage in criminal activity are held accountable,” the statement said. “This case remains under investigation. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
